PROBLEM
Flat-pack furniture often comes at the expense of aspects such as quality, expression, identity, and price. The practicality of flat-pack designs is not always aligned with tomorrow’s customer expectations.
PROCESS
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of rareraw, a total of 10 teams have participated in the project, including studios such as BIG-GAME (CH) MOHEIM (JPN), and Krøyer Sætter Lassen (DK), as well as Korea-based BKID, SWNA, JOONGHO-CHOI, TEAMVIRALS, be formative, and BYBIGTABLE.
The objective was to establish a design framework that enabled rareraw to expand their offering over time, with new colors, shapes, and sizes, ensuring an evolving and flexible product range. The partnership combined Rareraw’s exceptional craftsmanship and expertise in sheet metal with Form Us With Love’s experience of developing design systems for brands like IKEA and Muuto – where easy-to-build ideas were introduced – resulting in a range that blended simplicity with refined design, offering limitless possibilities for personalization.
SOLUTION
The goal of the product was to redefine traditional views of side tables by incorporating customizable features that met the changing needs of users. The collaboration aimed to inspire a greater appreciation for inventive design and craftsmanship, highlighting the potential of modular and adaptable furniture to elevate living spaces. Ultimately, the partnership aspired to create a product family that offered a wide and ever-evolving array of options for customers.
The design emphasized precision in the cuts and bends of the sheet metal, featuring a tapered waist, an inward-bent tabletop, and an innovative connection method. These elements created a soft yet industrial aesthetic that aligned with a design philosophy centered on craftsmanship, simplicity, versatility, and adaptability. Additionally, the flat-pack design not only reduced shipping volume by up to a quarter, but also encouraged users to participate in the assembly process, fostering a deeper connection with the product.
